SafeConnection Expert Panel Series – Middle East Panel: Leading Indicators—What Would Make You Change?

We all know some leading indicators are more reliable than others. Unfortunately, none of them is
perfect. Near-miss reports are valuable simply in terms of “preventing the next one”. But the number of
near-miss reports being turned in is also important. Observations can be a good leading indicator for
problem areas or behaviours, but only if they are quality observations. Hazard reports can also be
reliable, and in some cases, audits can be used as leading indicators. However, a low-quality audit that
provides a favourable “score” could also lead to a false sense of security. But in the end, someone has to
decide. What will this organization or corporation believe in enough to change course, change senior
operations personnel or stop the operation entirely?
The purpose of these expert panels is to let you hear from the people who actually have to make these
decisions. There’s lots of theory and philosophical advice out there. But rarely do academics or
consulting firms actually have to live with the consequences of the advice they are giving. These people
